Suicidal?

I am twenty years old and on medication for depression. I'm a little confused about what I'm feeling. I think about hurting myself a lot, especially about cutting my wrists with sharp objects or swallowing pills. Sometimes I don't care if I get hit by a car or attacked by someone. I don't think I want to die, but when I feel so bad I kind of wish I could just disappear for a while. Am I suicidal? Is a person suicidal if she keeps thinking about hurting herself?

Most people who think about hurting themselves or ending their lives do not want to die, they just want a solution to unbearable pain or emotional anguish. Thoughts about not going on, or passively allowing oneself to be killed, are common in severe depression; but again, these feelings are often reactions to the dilemma of feeling trapped or hopeless, not a real wish to die.

Think about this, if you simply wanted to die, why would you have written to Praisenation? There is clearly a healthy, help-seeking part of you that wants to get better, and get on with life.

First, go to see your Pastor or Biblical Councilor and tell them about your  feelings and thoughts about hurting yourself. They may suggest that you should also see your family Doctor with regard to other counseling. They will be far more able to access your situation being face to face.

In the mean time, Pray. Ask God to be in your life and to give stability of mind. He will assure you, comfort you and protect you. You have been wise enough to seek help, please, I pray you are willing to hand your troubles over to Jesus who will replace them with love and understanding..
